We've had another family tragedy. Last week Aunt Mary lost her three year battle with cancer. When we were growing up in NY, Aunt Mary and Uncle Walter (Dad's brother) were the only members of our family who lived as far out of the city as we did. We saw them all the time. Any time they came in to town they would come and visit, and it was always fun. When Mom and Dad celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary my sisters and I threw a surprise anniversary party for them. Considering my oldest sister Elizabeth was only 14 at the time, we relied on a lot of adult help and Aunt Mary and Uncle Walter were right there. When Mom and Dad moved down here to Georgia, Aunt Mary and Uncle Walter threw a huge good-bye party for them. Everyone in the family came.
I remember the first time we went camping. We went with Uncle Walter and Aunt Mary and we had a great time. They were always there for holidays and any special events we had, but the best times were when they would come over and just hang out with us. I remember nights sitting around our kitchen table just laughing and laughing together. Aunt Mary would always bring a crumb cake and the grown ups would smoke and drink coffee while us kids would try to get some more cake.
Aunt Mary was an incredible person. We're all going to miss her.
Ave Maria!
